FAN EXCLUSIVE: Braves Hall of Famer Chipper Jones Joins Cellini & Dimino for In-Studio, Extended Interview

CELLINI:
I wanted to talk about your Major League debut, September 11th, 1993. Do you remember that? Say what was going through your mind when you put that official uniform on for the first time.

CHIPPER:
Yes, I do, and I knew I wasn’t gonna play because we were hot on the heels of San Francisco. The only chance that I had to play was if we were beating somebody 15 to nothing or Sid Breem needed a pinch runner in the 7th or 8th inning. That’s the only time I was going to play, so I was brushing up on my, you know, my base running, getting with the coaches, and learning the call. You know, learning moves, you know, tendencies. All this kind of stuff. So yeah, I think. I scored a couple runs I think, or so, September 11th. It would have given us about 3 weeks till the end of the season. I got three at bats in three weeks and I probably had six or six or seven.

CELLINI:
Or probably never sat on the bench like that in your entire life.

CHIPPER:
No, no.

CELLINI:
How was that?

CHIPPER:
Mentally it was. It was different, but it was educational. If you take it in an educational…as an educational situation, you know, sit back, be a sponge, keep your mouth shut, observe, watch what’s going on, learn and…and then apply it when you…when you get in there. So I just wanted to be as prepared as I could for the role that I knew I was going to have.
