680 THE FAN, ATLANTA – The Falcons need to strike while the iron is hot and take their quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft.

You (hopefully) will not be in this position in the immediate future. There is no guarantee that another top-notch quarterback is going to be in the draft classes that are coming ahead.

The Falcons have two first round picks and one third round selection on offensive linemen in their last two drafts. You also have a quarterback who is not getting any younger. It would behoove you to take Justin Fields, Trey Lance or Zach Wilson.

I know that people are going to say that they could take Oregon offensive tackle Penei Sewell at that fourth pick. Why? So you have a rookie left tackle who is having to learn on the job again? Besides, I think the QB definitely wants to have more veteran help on the line, than having yet another rookie at a crucial spot.

We’re also seeing that teams with QB’s on their rookie deal are in better position to succeed. Have your guy, let Matt Ryan play out this season, take the cap hit in 2022 and then move on into your future as a franchise.

The fans are hungry for the future to be here sooner rather than later. I’d much rather make that pick for the QB now and start the clock on development in the NFL. Again, there’s no guarantee that a franchise QB is in any future drafts. I think you have a better chance of finding him in this coming draft.
