Today: ON THE RECORD – GEORGIA BULLDOGS, THE BRAVES NEED 10 MORE IN SEPTEMBER, HAVE WE LEARNED ANYTHING, and FOOTBALL PICKS!

ON THE RECORD - GEORGIA BULLDOGS

The Dawgs are about to begin a 10-2 regular season to follow up the disappointing 7-5 of the Kirby Era debut in 2016.

Georgia will be up to the challenge, sweep the state of Tennessee, best the weak sisters and improve by 3 games.

I don’t care if they make the SEC Title Game or not, but an improvement of 3 games and a return to a prominent bowl appearance should always be the expectation. Kirby has all the tools he needs to succeed. I expect to see it, now.

BRAVES NEED 10 MORE IN SEPTEMBER

Ten more wins…

It sounds easy but it suddenly has become a struggle. Entering play on Saturday 9/2 the Braves need ten wins to improve on last season. They had 67 wins in 2015, 68 in 2016. Getting just 69 wins won’t have anyone excited this winter. The bottom fell out of team expectations almost as soon as they hit .500 at 45-45.

This off season will be one of questions and turnover. It may be more than the manager and roster. The front office reportedly is in the midst of civil war. Whatever happens this winter, it will be hard to sell progress without tangible wins to show for it.

HAVE WE LEARNED ANYTHING?

I wonder how many of us have watched the visual messages out of Texas and understood the greater context?

The rescue workers and other first responders never asked what was the political or religious affiliation and sexual preference of anyone in need of assistance. The citizenry came to the aid of anyone who was in distress. People showed true compassion without thought of apparent danger. It was beautiful.

Yet day after day we have been flooded with mainstream media messages about how the country is divided. We are told that we are a segmented society. I reject the message, completely.

This Saturday in Atlanta the fan bases of Alabama and Florida State were mingling downtown with the Dragoncon attendees and the Black Gay Pride parade. Again, beautiful. “The City Too Busy To Hate” was in glorious display for the entire nation to see. Sorry to get off the normal “sports” messages, but I’m hoping we can return to a time when we got along far better than recent history. Don’t let others tell you how America is in 2017. We will define that!
