What Do the Braves Do With Adams Now Freeman Has Returned?

When Freddie Freeman went down with a fractured wrist four weeks ago, it seemed like the beginning of the end of of the 2017 baseball season in Atlanta. But then, 72 hours later, the club struck a deal with the Cardinals to acquire first baseman Matt Adams. Through Monday’s action, Adams is hitting .306 with 10 homers, 27 RBI and 18 extra base hits in 28 games. So logically, the next question out of Braves fans mouths now becomes “what do we do with Adams when Freeman returns?” Not a whole lot of people could have even fathomed the question could shift to “what do we do with Freddie Freeman when he’s healthy?”

Freddie Freeman takes grounders at 3rd Base from Ron Washington.

But on Wednesday afternoon, the latter became more of a reality as the All-Star first baseman started working with Ron Washington, taking ground balls at third base. Shortly thereafter, Freeman met with the media at his locker, addressing his future. “I’ll do anything to help this team win” Freeman said on Wednesday. “Me moving to third, if that’s what it is, I’ll do it” he added. Freeman, a two time All-Star first baseman has noticed the impact Matt Adams has had and knows it would benefit the club to keep that bat in the order once he returns.

In addition to working with Ron Washington, expect future Hall of Famer Chipper Jones to spend some time working with Freeman on the intricacies of the hot corner. Freeman exchanged texts with Jones on Tuesday night and then again on Wednesday morning about Freeman’s new adventure. In the meantime, Freeman is healing ahead of schedule and said the target date for his return was July 14th, just after the All-Star Break. But, neither Freeman or his skipper Brian Snitker would rule out the possibility of being activated as early as July 6th for the final series of the first half in Washington. Time will tell if the plan works, but you’ve got to give Freeman a lot of credit, making a drastic change like this for the betterment of his team.
