Hometeam's Hawks Report for the Homestand

Mar 21, 2012 -- 2:32am

In Teague We Must Trust

Jeff Teague can be the piece to the Hawks puzzle that could dramatically increase success this season. His ability to get around defenders has been critical in breaking down defenses. However, Teague has had trouble finishing at the rim and needs to find a way to pump up his assist numbers. Teague is averaging 4.3 assists per game for the week of 3/19/12. The Hawks have been down bodies every night this season and need someone to help the other guys score easier.

Teague has had only one game where he reached 10 assists in a game, and while we don’t expect that number every night, bolstering his assists numbers would help Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, and Zaza Pachulia get easier shots at the basket. Pachulia has rolled to the rim nicely after setting picks and if Teague could find him and his teammates. High energy is a must.

Wounded Beaks

It seems only coach Larry Drew and Harry the Hawk are the only Hawks not to be on the injury report this season. The Hawks have played several games with only 10 players dressed at game time, which has impacted scoring and 3-point shooting in games.

Marvin Williams (Hip Flexor), Willie Green (Hamstring), Vladimir Radmanovic (back), Jannero Pargo (Appendix), Jason Collins (left elbow), are the latest to join the list of the infirmed. Tracy McGrady is scheduled not to play on the second night of back-to-back situations. The man-man games missed will be astronomical this season and the Hawks hope to get a shot to get healthy for the playoff run.

Bummed at the Buzzer

Heartache has come at the horn on a number of occasions this season. Battling through an incredible number of injures, the Hawks have been in tight games in the fourth quarter of games. With possession of the ball and with chances to tie (or mostly) win, the team has fallen just a little short several occasions.

1/3/12 @ Chicago- Down 2 with 3.7 seconds to go, Joe Johnson has to force a tough 3-pointer which misses.

Bulls win 74-72.

2/29/12 vs. Warriors- Down 80-78 with 15 seconds left, Jeff Teague misses a jumper. Warriors hit free throws.

Warriors win 85-82.

3/7/12 @ Miami- Down 89-86 with the ball with :02 seconds left Jannero Pargo gets a good look at a 3-pointer that back-irons as the horn sounds.

Heat win 89-86

3/9/12 - @Detroit- Down one with :24 seconds remaining on the clock, the Hawks drive the length of the floor, Joe Johnson missed a jumper with :02 left, Josh Smith gets the rebound and puts the ball in the basket … after time expires.

Pistons win 86-85.

3/13/12 -@Denver- Down one with :01 second left Kirk Hinrich is fouled. He goes to the free-throw line and drains the first attempt … misses the second and the Hawks go to overtime. In the extra session the Hawks are down one with :02 seconds left the Hawks run a perfect play for Zaza Pachulia who dives to the basket as he get the ball with both hands as he goes up for the win … the ball ricochets off of the glass.

Nuggets win 118-117.

3/19 – Down three with 10 seconds to go after being down 15 points in the fourth quarter, Hawks guard Kirk Hinrich gets an inbound pass and races up the court. With no time outs, he drives the lane, kicks the ball out to a wide open Jeff Teague with: 04 seconds left … Teague fires an air ball.

Celtics win 79-76.

The basketball Gods have to be more kind. Hopefully this is the end of this list. Jeez!

Let's go Hawks.
