PACIFIC RIM ***1/2 OUT OF ****

Having been a historic monster movie fanatic for years, Pacific Rim is an exasperating gasp of relief. Unlike some predecessors such as the horrifying Transformers flicks and the never-ending Godzilla series, this film delivers on an emotionally captivating level. With master film-maker Guillermo Del Toro behind the camera, each action sequence prevails as a stunning piece of art created with numerous breath-taking special effects and moments of stunning photography. But the real brilliance of the film comes within the script written by Travis Beacham and Del Toro as well. The dialogue is written with a believable sense of intelligence and each character in the film is given their time on screen. Noteworthy performances from Idris Elba [finally redeeming himself from Prometheus] and Rinko Kikuchi give the film a perfect balance between character development and monster madness. It’s an especially amazing achievement for the creators of this film because of how difficult it is working on the monster movie genre being that we aren’t there to see it for the acting skills. However, the characters are dramatic enough to keep us awake while giving just enough monster thrills to satisfy our needs. Pacific Rim is the greatest monster movie of the past ten years and must be considered a view for Gareth Edwards, currently working on the highly anticipated Godzilla film planned for 2014. Pacific Rim is a must-see for any monster movie geek or for anyone else looking for an enjoyable, summertime, popcorn movie. No Megan Fox on this one, but at least we get a good movie.
