I feel bad that most sports fans don’t pay much attention to tennis. You are doing yourself a disservice by missing Rafael Nadal. Sunday he beat American John Isner to win in Cincinnati. He is still undefeated this year on hard courts, and since returning from a knee injury which sidelined him for 7 months, his overall record this year is 53-3. He has reached the finals in 11 of the 12 events he’s entered. I remember watching Michael Jordan and what impressed me most was not that Jordan was one of the most physically gifted players ever, but it was his ferocious competitiveness. He wanted it more than any other athlete I have ever seen, until Nadal. Rafa since turning pro about 10 years ago, has earned approximately 55 million in just prize money, and probably double that in endorsements and appearances, yet he plays every point like he’s broke, as if his life depended on it. Watching him inspires me. To see a supremely talented individual be totally and completely driven to succeed is captivating. Everyone should aspire to be like MJ and Nadal, not necessarily in sports but in life. The tireless dogged pursuit of your goal, whatever it might be, persevering and overcoming. Guys like MJ and Nadal make being a sports fan rewarding.
