Georgia Bulldogs Most Important Freshman

May 17, 2012 -- 8:31am

The 'Dogs freshman class starts arriving in Athens, over the next few weeks. It's rated as another solid class. Richt and his staff have really done a nice job the last couple of years on the recruiting scene.

But who is the most important member of this class, as far as the 2012 season is concerned? Is it 5-star OL John Theus? Or could it be 3-star kicker Marshall Morgan?

Theus is a can't miss guy. Some believe he will step right in at OT and grab a spot immediately. And the O-Line is a position group that needs a boost. Got to see John in one of those high school all-star games and he was impressive. Polished. Fundamentally sound. Strong. So, Theus making an immediately impact wouldn't be a surprise. He appears ready.

However, the placekicker gets the nod here. Marshall Morgan arrives on campus already penciled in as the field goal kicker. Walsh is off to the NFL. And Marshall Morgan was recruited to replace him. He's expected to step in and perform immediately.

Walsh attempted 35 FG's last season. Let's say Morgan gets 25-30 attempts. That's a huge impact on the season. The outcome of several games could hang in the balance. A big game miss could cost the 'Dogs a shot at a title.

In this case, the kicker is more important than the offensive lineman.

Imagine that first road trip to Missouri coming down to a 45 yard FG...sure hope the freshman kicker is ready to make it. Theus has some time to develop. Morgan needs to perform immediately.
